NZ LAW firm Johnston Lawrence is gearing up to represent New Zealanders
with health problems alleged to have been caused by soy infant formula.
Roger Chapman of Johnston Lawrence explains.
Many
people believe that soy products are natural and "good for
us". This applies
particularly to soy infant formula, used by many parents to feed
babies and young children who were allergic to human or cow's milk,
or simply because they believe it is better.
Soy infant formula has been readily available at supermarkets
and pharmacies for many years.
Scientists
from the United States Food and Drug Administration and elsewhere
have reported, however, that soy contains agents that have the potential
to cause human thyroid and reproductive disorders.
There is scientific evidence - much of it based on New Zealand
research - that infants fed on soy infant formula are exposed to
high levels of these agents and are at risk of developing these
disorders in later life.
Thyroid
disorders include goitre and auto-immune thyroid disease.
Symptoms include inability to control weight, chronic tiredness
or lethargy, low body temperature, hair loss and dry skin.
Reproductive disorders include premature maturation, infertility
and hormone imbalances.
The
Ministry of Health has issued warnings to feed soy-based products
to infants only on medical advice.
Regulatory agencies in Australia and the United Kingdom
have given similar warnings.
Despite this, soy infant formula is still widely used in
New Zealand.
New
Zealanders who have suffered health problems from soy infant formula
may now be taking legal action.
Recent nationwide advertising on behalf of Johnston
Lawrence clients for people affected drew hundreds of responses.
If
you or your children were fed soy infant formula and have suffered
from thyroid or reproductive disorders, Johnston Lawrence would
like to hear from you. Please
